The release of Apple's Mac OS 8 brings increased functionality to your computer. The "Language Kit Updater for Mac OS 8" is designed to make this transition as easy as possible for Language Kit users. This Language Kit Updater will update your Apple Language Kit for compatibility with Mac OS 8.0 on your Mac OS compatible computer. The Apple Language Kit Updater for Mac OS 8 (LKU8) is necessary when attempting to use one of the following:
Current Language Kits with Mac OS 8.0 or newer.
Arabic Language Kit 1.0.1
Chinese Language Kit 1.2 (also CLK 1.1.1)
Cyrillic Language Kit 1.0
Hebrew Language Kit 1.0.1
Indian Language Kit 1.0
Japanese Language Kit 1.2
Korean Language Kit 1.0
Any attempt to use the LKU8 with previous versions of the above Language Kits is not supported and therefore not recommended.
Disk Layout
LKU8 consists of 2 disks: "LKU Install Disk 1" and "LKU Install Disk 2"
Disk 2 contains only Arabic and Persian fonts. If you do not have the Arabic Language Kit installed, you will not be asked to insert this disk.
Obtaining LKU8
The Apple Language Kit Updater for Mac OS 8 has been posted to Apple Software Updates <www.info.apple.com>, with the following path: US/Macintosh/System/Language Kits. There is no charge from Apple to download this software. LKU Install Disk 2 (see below) is only needed for the Arabic Language Kit.
Apple Language Kit Updater for Mac OS 8 will also be included with all current Language Kits as soon as it becomes available. If you purchased a current Language Kit from the above list and LKU8 was not included, please download it from Apple Software Updates.
Removing LKU8
You cannot remove the LKU8 after it has been installed because no "Custom Remove" option has been provided.
Adobe Type Manager (ATM)
ATM 4.0.2 in Mac OS 8 fixes several bugs with regards to Language Kits.
To install ATM 4.0.2, follow these steps:
1. Select Customize in the Mac OS 8 installer
2. Select Custom Install in the QuickDraw GX installer
3. Select ATM
4. Select Install
Duplicate international files?
The Mac OS 8.0 installer has the custom install option of installing "international files" such as WorldScriptェ I, WorldScript II, InputBackSupport and Inline Support. You might see duplicates of some of these files in the System Folder if you have the following scenario: You have installed a Language Kit product on top of a localized pre-8.0 Mac OS and then updated with a localized Mac OS 8.0. The solution is to run the LKU8 installer. LKU8 can be installed after individual Language Kits have been installed, or after several have been installed. However, it is essential that LKU8 be used after the last Language Kit has been installed into Mac OS 8.
Quit Order For Utilities
Apple is aware of a bug which causes temporarily dependent utilitiesムsuch as a localized application's Help reader or the Hangul Dictionary Utility in the Korean Language Kitムto freeze if you quit the application they were opened from, before quitting the dependent utility or application.
The workaround is to first quit the utility, then quit the the application. This bug will be fixed in a subsequent version.
Installation Requirements
The goal of the LKU8 is to make updating the above current list of Apple Language Kits for compatibility with Mac OS 8 as easy as possible. For this reason, many environment checks take place when you select a destination disk with the installer. If these conditions are not found, installation cannot take place:
Mac OS 8 You must have Mac OS 8.0 or greater installed. You will get the same error if you have no system installed as you will with a pre-8.0 Mac OS installed.
Complete Apple Language Kit LKU8 checks that essential and distinguishing elements of Apple Language Kit products are present, as opposed to other language solutions.
Primary script Since Language Kits have much in common with localized systems, such as Mac OS 8-Japanese, it is important that the installer distinguish between the Japanese localized system and the Japanese Language Kit. The LKU8 will not update any localized system or Language Kit which has been tampered with to simulate a localized system. Some users have found tools to change the primary script. Apple believes that using such tools is an inferior solution to the Language Kit model of many secondary scripts. Using a primary script-switching tool requires a system reboot to continue working and that is not considered user-friendly. Some such tools also have side effects. No Language Kit which has been artificially switched to act as the system's primary script will be recognized for updating by LKU8.
Current Language Kit The list at the top of this Read Me enumerates the current Language Kits referred to throughout this document. Any kit which is a newer version of the listed Language Kits or not listed there at all because it's a newer product, does not require this update.
What does LKU8 install and what does it remove?
The LKU8 checks your system to detect which Apple Language Kits you have installed and automatically updates the files you need. Regardless of which Apple Language Kit you have installed, LKU8 deletes obsolete files and installs some files as follows:
